BodaSoma – Rosalind Holgate Smith & Isabella Shirley-Miller

BodaSoma is a cross-disciplinary duo, creating performance art and installation informed by practices in drawing, theatre, dance and somatic movement.  Namely we are Rosalind Holgate Smith and Isabella Shirley-Miller. Over the past 6 months we have been engaging with our experience of soil and water as young women with a deep interest in our relationship to the earth and environmental and political unrest. As part of this work we have been developing a performance duet which we look forward to present at the festival.

I am an interdisplinary Artist. I draw, I move, I breath, I cry, I improvise, I perform, and make sculpture, video, architecture and other experiments. Through my practice I develop immersive installations or environments for the body.  These situations are intended to draw attention to our physical, sensory and emotional experience of the space. I began dancing contact at Dartington where I studied Fine Art, Contemporary practices and choreography between 2009-2012. I am interested in our physical relationship with materials, and how spatially we are drawn in different directions by our surroundings.

As an artist I intend to always grow, and transform into new ways of relating, performing and making. This haphazard journey into ‘aliveness’ is rooted in Release Technique, Authentic Movement, Experiential Anatomy, Insight Meditation, Contact Improvisation, Butoh:- practices I have engaged in for many years. Music also plays an intrinsic role in my creativity; rhythm, vibration, sensation and emotion interplay, inviting me to move, compose songs and write poetry.

Playing with the boundries within my being, a theme, between performers, audience and performer, life and art, I create performance which varies from the absurd, grotesque, intimate, comic, interactive, childlike, ritualistic. The intention is always to challenge collective etiquette and expectation.

Since graduating in BA Choreography with Textual Practices at Dartington College of Arts, I have performed in London, Gloucestershire and the South West whilst leading dance and craft workshops with children. I love to learn from people in all contexts and these children have taught me the value of imagination and play.

I am currently working in collaboration with Artist Isabella Shirely Miller, exploring soil and water with our bodies. This work is concerned with our nature as young women and animals, coming to our senses and rooting for expressionism. Together we are BodaSoma Company, www.bodasoma.wordpress.com. I look forward to share some of our work with you.
