A study in initiative and responsive touch as a way of developing our conscious state of sharing & curiosity in self and other.

Through a build up of trust explorations we will investigate and develop a state of listening and communicating our desires for touch and connection.  We will recognize when, in response to touch, there is a clear yes or no and acknowledge when a maybe appears or shifts.  We will explore how through touch we can share positive moments & memories of joy, lust, peace or love with our dance partner.  How can I put my shoes on you for a moment so that you can experience the fantastic sensations or feelings that I have?  How can I fully receive what you offer me to try on in a way that feels like just enough for me?  What is the CI dance potential when we seek to give and receive our positive life experiences through our knowledgeable open and communicative bodies?

Exploring Contact through Questions of Relating (16th – 21st July)

This is an experiment. Its ingredients are: a beautiful old English country-home; the community who run it and who’ve spent decades studying embodied meditation & relational consciousness; ongoing lab-groups, sharing circles; daily Contact jams; a sensual zone with bodywork rooms, tantra temple & BDSM play space; input from experts in communication skills & emotional release; yurts & other small spaces for group and one-to-one work; delicious vegetarian food; a wood-fired sauna; a documentation space; dorms, caravans, chalets & camping space – and of course you, the curious reader: your interests, your creativity, your fears, your commitment to Contact Improvisation, your experience in other embodied forms; your hopes for yourself & for the world; your honest presence.

The BREAD&Jam experiment (Building Relations, Eating, Active Discussion & Jamming) is an invitation to balance the sweet fleetingness of jam encounters with something more substantial and nourishing. We’re interested in exploring the hypothesis that Contact Improvisation can, besides being a beautiful dance form, provide a potent tool for relating to oneself; to nature; in groups, pairs or trios; non-verbally or verbally; sexually; politically; therapeutically, spiritually and above all playfully.

At the heart of the event are small ongoing lab-groups that explore one or more of these facets of connection. These groups will be formed in advance according experimenters’ interests . The following themes have already been suggested:

  • CI & Authentic Relating
  • CI as an Embodied Meditation
  • Living and dancing in community
  • Body politics and CI
  • Sexuality, Sensuality & Spirituality
  • Power & Intense Sensation.
  • Connecting to nature through our dance

Small daily sharing circles with people from different morning lab-groups will give people a safe space to share how they’re feeling and what they’re learning. The afternoons are reserved for a number of prescheduled workshops and many ad-hoc lab, jam, discussion and presentation proposals. The evenings will include nightly contact jams and more edgy late night activities for the curious.

We will keep this year’s Experiment fairly small – around 80 people – to allow a rich web of inter-relating.  Everyone here is a collaborator so if you would like to help us create something  amazing by sharing your curiosity, teaching, facilitation, music, bodywork, or documentation skills please download the Touch&Play 2013 collaboration form.Touch&Play 2013 collaboration form

All bookings should be paid for in full prior to the start of the event.

Festival worker

There is the option to be at Osho Leela as a helper.  Helpers work 6 hours a day and get the festival for free or 4 hours a day and pay £10 per day.  Please note that the working hours cannot be scheduled around the labs and you will have to miss workshops. If you are interested in this option please visit: http://www.osholeela.co.uk/docs/fest_workers.html and get in touch with Amoura from Osho Leela.

Luxury accommodation supplements

The basic sleeping options at Osho Leela are in dorms shared with up to 12 people (matrasses and sheets provided) or camping. For those who want even more comfort there is the option to stay in one of the more private caravans or pine-log cabins for an extra fee. • Big bedroom/lounge bedroom in caravan £25 per night = £100 for five nights.
  • Small bedroom in caravan (but still double bed) £20 per night = £80 four five nights.

We have a special festival deal with Osho Leela, so you pay for four nights and get one night free.

NB. Dormitory beds are limited and allocated on a first come first serve basis. To make sure you get the place you want, you need to pay the accommodation supplement before the Experiment begins.

Sonja Bruhlmann – The Transparent Dance

By Sonja Bruhlmann

I am excited about this year’s theme of Bread&Jam. It is a process that has already started for me. I co-organise the ongoing Bread&Jams in London and attended the first one in Barcelona. Bread&Jams offer a platform to deepen the relationships that emerge out of the Contact Improv community and I really enjoy these spaces where people can meet, dance, eat, exchange ideas and inspire each other. The event in summer is like a fusion point for this ongoing process that will hopefully continue after the event and grow into a bigger project.

For the week at Osho Leela I look forward to working with an extended group of experienced researchers, having ongoing labs and spaces to try out new ideas.

My current curiosity is how to integrate verbal exchange and dancing, to connect not just physically, but also emotionally and intellectually. For the last couple of years I have been experimenting with different tools that enable the dancer to bring more of his personality into the dancing. Such tools are borrowed from physical theatre, authentic movement and various communication techniques. Starting points can be emotions, memories, sensations or thoughts; what happens if we allow ourselves to express them during a contact improvisation dance? I would like to share some aspect of this research and deepen it with others that share similar interests.

Imagine two polarities, feel into one of them, move it, become it, be moved by it, describe it and let it go. Then go to the other pole and do the same. Finally bring the two experiences together into the same space and see how they melt, fuse, react as a mix. This is the heart of tantra, the dance of the polarities, dark and light, male and female, energy and conciousness. I’d like to explore what the fusion of two opposite energies create as a third energy in the middle.
